FP Sport Centre

FPSC: Creating a Vibrant and Exciting Node at Farrer Park (Concept Proposal)

Envisioned as a Green Tapestry interweaving the rich Sport Heritage of the site with lush Nature, the Sports Centre is composed as a organic fluid low-rise building form that blends in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and greenery. The diagonal lattice skin creates an instant iconic place-maker for Insta-ready public attraction, reminiscent of undulating horse saddles silhouetted against the urban setting to foster the equestrian history of Farrer Park as the site of first racecourse in Singapore.

The flowing lines on the façade also reflect over the swimming pools echoing the gentle ripples of water, amidst lush terracing planters around the entire streetscapes.  This blurs and dissolves the entire 2-storey building into the landscape. In the day, the lattice screen shields the functional spaces from the western sun and provides privacy for changing rooms at pool deck and in gym above. In the evening, the entire building radiates and glows softly like a lantern to herald the rejuvenation of Farrer Park back to its sporting glory days.

In line with Vision 2030, the Farrer Park Sports Centre will become the focal point for sports programme, activities and events in the region. As a centre steep in heritage value and sporting excellence, this nexus of inspiration to the younger generation will provide a highly porous and welcoming a wide diversity of recreational and communal spaces surrounded by lush greenery and Nature. The 2-storey main building is tucked against Keng Lee Rd and lushly landscaped with terraced planters and roof garden to provide a green forested panorama that continues to the proposed “Racecourse Park” and future HDB precinct green. Motifs of galloping horses including a huge mural painted on the entire gallery stand reinforce the rich equestrian history of Farrer Park. On the northern side, the competition pool and gallery are sheltered by a lattice/truss structure cantilevered from behind the gallery. This opens into uninterrupted views to the lush green surroundings and protects the swimmers and users from weather. Maintenance decks are subtly hidden in-between the roof truss to allow easy access via catladders on both ends to service the underside of the metal roof and an extensive array of solar panels above.  The fluid lines of the roof lattice create a unique dual illusion of undulating dynamism and high energy during competition and large-scale events and zen-like folds of water ripples on other quieter days.
