The red brick Power Station “A” at Pasir Panjang was commissioned in 1953, it was Singapore’s second power station. Decommissioned in the early 1980s, and lost its two iconic 235 foot high chimneys in the 1990s. However, it is now blocked by a few industrial buildings next to the main road. It is forgotten by the public. The intent of the proposal is to re-inhabit the site and the beautiful gem hidden from the public with various new programmes and activities at the power station. The proposal intends to make use of the existing building with minimum alteration to simply refresh the building and function while keeping it as original as possible to allow the visitor to re-live the historic building.
Preamble
The intent of the proposal is to re-inhabit the site and the beautiful gem hidden from the public with various new programmes and activities the power station. The proposal intends to make use of the existing building with minimum alteration to simply refresh the building and function while keeping it as originally as possible to allow the visitor to re-live the historic building.
Concept/Key Idea
The concept is to use the existing building and features as much as possible to retain its original beauty and to highlight the use of the building in the past as a power station. The industrial architecture is highly emphasized. The quality and feature of the existing spaces such as high volume spaces, long span structure, platform space, small area space et cetera are identified and zoned out to use as the criteria to select and design programmes and activities to suit the space. The proposal aims to maintain environmentally sustainability by adapting the existing buildings rather than rebuilding. The large volume space allows passive cooling and ventilation and zonal air-conditioning can be adopted for places which needs more cooling. These will help to ensure low carbon footprint and low energy usage.
Complementary programmes/activities are also chosen to support each other both logistically and economically. Event spaces can be carved out to support one off events which complements other programmes and activities. This will ensure economic sustainability. At the same time, the space will also target to connect and link people from different walks of life and different discipline together by have these programmes/activities housed in the same power station hence be sustainable socially.
